The choice of titles for inclusion was also explained: ‘The selection is made according to the Press shows that have taken place in the month preceding our date for going to press and will try as far as possible to include films showing in London, and on general release, at the time of publication.’ This note suggested that the reason for adding it to the MFB was because ‘a growing number of periodicals on the Continent’ were doing likewise, implying that it was the first British magazine to do so. This feature was, as the magazine admitted in a brief editorial note, modelled on a similar chart, the ‘Conseil des dix’ (Council of Ten), in the French magazine Cahiers du cin éma. Their opinions were represented in the form of star ratings, and the film titles were ranked in order by their average rating. ![]() On the back cover there appeared a chart setting out the judgments on current releases of nine critics, drawn mainly from the ranks of London-based newspaper reviewers. In its issue for April 1962, the BFI’s Monthly Film Bulletin (sister magazine at the time to Sight and Sound) introduced a new feature to coincide with a refreshed graphic design.
